ALTUS, Oklahoma -- Two people died after a civilian airplane crashed about a mile and a half west of the Altus Municipal Airport around 11:30 Sunday morning, according to an airport supervisor.
The pilot and passenger both died when the 2001 Skybolt experimental aircraft crashed in a field in Jackson County. The plane had taken off from Altus airport around 11:19 a.m. and for unknown reasons crashed to the ground and caught fire.
The pilot was Robert Munson, 38, from Blair, Oklahoma. The passenger was Zachary Cook, 17, from Altus.
A spokesperson at the airport said they could see wreckage and flames from the airport as emergency personnel responded to the crash.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the exact cause of the crash.

The plane, identified as a 2001 Skybolt experimental aircraft, took off from Altus/Quartz Mountain Regional airport about 11:20 a.m., troopers said. It crashed and caught fire shortly thereafter in a field about a mile and a half west of the runway, airport supervisor Daniel Adams said.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash, the patrol reported.

ALTUS — At least two people died this morning when a biplane crashed near the Altus airport, an airport official said.
The number and identities of the victims were not released. Altus/Quartz Mountain Regional Airport supervisor Daniel Adams said multiple people were aboard the plane when it crashed about 11:20 a.m. about a mile and a half west of the airfield and there were no survivors.
Officials from Altus, Jackson County and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were on the scene this afternoon, Adams said. Federal aviation officials also will likely become part of the crash investigation.
